In August 1918, during the final months of the First World War, this photograph captured a carrier pigeon being released from a British tank near Albert, France.

Pigeons were used to carry vital messages when battlefield communication was unreliable. The image holds a striking visual irony: a white pigeon, so closely associated with peace, emerging from a machine built for war.

It captures the contradictions of the First World War — old and new, fragility and machinery, communication and destruction — all within a single moment.
