In February 1945, U.S. Marines fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War on the island of Iwo Jima. After days of intense combat, a small American flag was first raised atop Mount Suribachi. Later that same day, a larger flag replaced it so it could be seen across the island.

This piece captures that second flag raising—the moment photographed by photographer Joe Rosenthal. The image quickly became a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the determination of those who served during World War II. While the photograph marked a powerful moment of hope, the battle itself continued for weeks, with thousands more lives lost before the island was secured.

It serves as a record of a moment that came to symbolize resilience in the face of extraordinary sacrifice.
